  • Overview

    The Operator Apprenticeship prepares an experienced production worker for the position of Line Operator.


    The apprenticeship will focus on learning and demonstrating the following competencies:

    Job Specific

    • At the start of every shift, conduct 5S and production audits of the previous shift, to ensure cleanliness, proper setting adjustments, and better understand machine issues and production requirements for the upcoming shift.
    • Interpret orders to determine machine adjustments and material requirements.
    • Set, or direct helpers and assistant operator to set stops, guides, speeds, pressures, etc. as indicated by the set-up and run procedures.
    • Make daily job assignments for helper and crew.
    • Assume responsibility for quality and quantity of product manufactured.
    • Monitor machine operation to prevent work piece defects or machine malfunctions.
    • Measure work piece dimensions to determine accuracy of operation.
    • Conduct in-process inspections of machinery, equipment, raw materials, and team members’ contributions to daily goals.
    • Perform minor machine maintenance (oiling, cleaning dies, and replacing minor parts).
    • Work in conjunction with maintenance to prioritize planned maintenance, reduce unplanned maintenance, and prepare for preventative maintenance to ensure efficiency of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) efforts.
    • Conduct complete changeover and line-out for each new run.
    • Record, or direct the recording of, production and downtime data and machine operating data as needed, including the maintenance and update of the manufacturing line’s Glass House.
    • Must possess troubleshooting skills; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; be a problem solver.
    • Write and submit engineering/maintenance/machine modification requests.
    • Adheres to company safety policies; immediately report violations to Safety and/or management.
    • Must use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for this position as indicated on the Job Assessment for PPE form.
    • Coordinate helper and crew in a safe and efficient operation.
    • Ability and willingness to train other associates; train team members in various aspects of the job.
    • Insure team members have necessary tools and training to perform jobs efficiently.
    • Communicate team needs and concerns to management.
    • Read and interpret documents (safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions and procedure manuals).
    • Fill out routine reports and communicate effectively.
    • Calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
    • Adhere to all company policies and guidelines

    People Specific

    • Hold and facilitate accountability meetings and team huddles to discuss safety, attendance, reporting requirements, and disseminate important production and organization information to team members; and encourage two-way communication to improve engagement, involvement, and satisfaction.
    • Coach team members to an understanding of the position they hold, the company mission and culture, and team engagement.
    • Foster and exemplify team play, promoting the spirit of cooperation among team members on the line and with other PBE associates.
    • Communicate in a positive, timely, and accurate manner and actively listen and respond to what team members are saying and what they need.

    Program Rules and Requirements:

    • The apprenticeship is approximately 18-24 months in duration and includes on-the-job learning, classroom training at PBE,
    • The starting pay will be Operator Apprentice Level 1 rate and will progress through 3 stages of learning based on achievement. Upon satisfactory completion of the program the apprentice will be promoted to a Line Operator position when available.
    • Testing or other skill demonstrations may be required to verify skill competence.
    • In addition to working a regular 40-hour schedule and overtime (as needed), the program could require unpaid time to attend classes related to skill and knowledge advancement.
    • The apprentice must maintain regular attendance at work and required classes.
    • The work shift will begin on 1st shift but may change to other shifts to accommodate training needs and class schedules. After the successful completion of the program, the incumbent will be assigned to any shift where there is a need.
    • If the apprentice must drop out or be removed from the program before successful completion for any reason, s/he will be reassigned if possible (based on ability, interest and scheduling needs).  However, reassignment is not guaranteed.


    • A minimum of 3 years of previous experience in operating production equipment or current PBE production experience is preferred.
    • Good mechanical reasoning/aptitude (testing required).
    • Ability to properly use hand tools.
    • Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide, units of measurement, whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals).
    • Demonstrated self-motivation and self-direction in a previous position.
    • Demonstrated ability to understand and carry out written and/or oral instructions.
    • Willingness to ask questions/seek answers for clarification of duties, assignments, and training
    • Be a team player and help others when needed
    • Demonstrated talent for and/or previous experience in leading a team
    • Ability to communicate in a positive, timely, and accurate manner
    • Demonstrated willingness to follow directions from the trainer or supervisor
    • A good attendance record
    • No discipline violations for the most recent six-month period
    • Must be able and willing to work any shift during and at the completion of the program.

     Physical Demands

    • Must be able to regularly and as needed: stand, walk, crouch, bend, lift and sit; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and taste or smell.
    • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and color vision.
