  • Overview

    The purpose of this position is to provide day-to-day support to the Line Operator in all aspects of line operation and to act as Line Operator when needed.  The Assistant Operator shares responsibility for achieving all production line metrics.

    Responsibilities

    • Skills and Responsibilities:

      Job Specific

      • Assist the Line Operator by:

      -          Ensuring a safe workplace

      -          Making daily job assignments for helper and crew.

      -          Leading the team to achieve line performance metrics.

      -          Interpreting orders to determine machine adjustments and material requirements.

      -          Setting, or directing helpers to set stops, guides, speeds, pressures, etc. as indicated by the set-up and run procedures.

      -          Conducting complete changeover and line-out for each new run.

      -          Writing and submitting engineering/maintenance/machine modification requests.

       

      • Ensure team members have necessary tools and training to perform jobs efficiently.
      • Monitor machine operation to prevent work piece defects or machine malfunctions.
      • Measure work piece dimensions to determine accuracy of operation.
      • Perform minor machine maintenance (oiling, cleaning dies, and replacing minor parts).
      • Act as a problem solver: troubleshoot issues as they arise; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;
      • Lead the team to adhere to all company policies and guidelines. Adhere to company safety policies. Immediately report policy violations to the safety department and/or management;
      • Train team members in various aspects of the job.
      • Communicate team needs and concerns to the Operator.
      • Read and interpret documents (safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions & procedure manuals).
      • Fill out routine reports and communicate effectively.
      • Calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
      • Be dependable: be on time every day
      • Use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for this position as indicated on the Job Assessment for PPE form.
      • Perform any duties that may be assigned to position.
      • By accepting this position, understand that one may be assigned an Operator position on any line, on any shift, as the company determines appropriate.

       

      When Filling-in for Line Operator

      • At the start of every shift, conduct 5S and production audits of the previous shift, to ensure cleanliness, proper setting adjustments, and better understand machine issues and production requirements for the upcoming shift.
      • Work in conjunction with maintenance to prioritize planned maintenance, reduce unplanned maintenance, and prepare for preventative maintenance to ensure efficiency of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) efforts.
      • Record production and downtime data and machine operating data as needed.
      • Hold and facilitate accountability meetings and team huddles to discuss safety, attendance, reporting requirements, and disseminate important production and organization information to team members; encourage two way communication to improve engagement, involvement, and satisfaction.

    Qualifications

    Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

    • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or at least 1-2 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Must have demonstrated self-motivation and self-direction in previous positions.
    • Good attendance record
    • Ability to understand and carry out detailed instructions.
    • Ability and commitment to communicate effectively to the line team, across departments and to management on a one-to-one or group basis to achieve desired results.
    • Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide, units of measurement, whole numbers, common fractions, & decimals).
    • Ability to properly use power and hand tools
    • Must be below 2nd written warning discipline level for the most recent six-month period.
    • Minimum of 90 days in current position.

     

    Physical Demands:

    • Must be able to regularly and as needed:  stand, walk, crouch, bend, lift and sit; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and taste or smell.
    • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and color vision.
